Usually on Fridays I have a lot to say that is snappy and spicy. And this Friday, I almost didn’t write because I’m in such an odd and different place this week. Trust me, I still have a lot of fire, but it wasn’t coming out onto the page. Instead every time I started to write, it was conversations with God.
And so I thought, “surely God doesn’t intend for me to write my personal feelings to Him for everyone to see”. I mean, that’s just down right vulnerable and uncomfortable. But over and over, it was all I could write. So, I gave up and gave in. And while the post took little effort to write, it did take effort in being humble and brave.
You might have noticed that lately I’ve been talking a lot about prayer. Continue reading »

I’m an optimist, I swear I am. But I do admit, I have a funny way of looking at life. For example when my back started hurting I told myself, “well I’d better go to the doctor to see if I have bone cancer.” Yes, that was sick and twisted, but you see, if I had anything else wrong with me besides “bone cancer” then I had a win. A good thing. I guess I’m a “prepare for the worse, expect the best” kind of girl. I have no idea if that behavior is nature or nurture… but it is me. Continue reading »

If I knew why God didn’t answer prayers I’d be an “over a million copies” best seller.
When it comes to prayer I try to see things from God’s perspective, not mine. I realize how ridiculous that sentence looks since His ways are clearly not my ways (Isaiah 55:8) and I don’t even have a planck of “clue” when it comes to how things are done. Continue reading »

I’m a BIG fan of snopes.com . At this point most of my friends understand that if they send me something via email (you know: one of those prayers, stories, or rumors that spread like a virus on the internet) , I’m gonna “snope” it out. And if I read it, and it’s fake, I’m gonna call you out. Sorry, I’m built that way. You can hate me.
Some stories are acredited to the wrong author or the text and details have been changed. Take for example the famous Continue reading »

One time a man was asked, ”Why do you sky dive out of planes, isn’t that dangerous?” His reply was honest and sobering, “Because it’s not nearly as scary as the brain cancer I’m living with.”
It’s so easy to let things stop us. I’ve watched others become so burdened by life that they crawl into a hole like a hermit and live something that isn’t a life. There are times Continue reading »

A super smart person told me, “Sherry, you write for you, not others…”. Amongst other nuggets of wisdom, they went on to explain that God gives ME topics to write about because it applies to me, it’s something I need to learn and/or work out; not you. But if anyone gets something extra out of my personal development (and writing), then that’s a bonus. This is proving to be 101% true.
Right now I’m sitting at the computer, feeling so much pain in my sciatic nerve that I can barely concentrate on reading or writing. This pain is new to me, and has an effect on everything I do; it becomes an undercurrent to even the simple and mundane.
As the morning wore on, I kept getting up to stretch, walk, etc… I’d get up to find another Continue reading »

Far be it from me to give a quick grammar lesson, but here it goes for those who are years beyond recalling information from bonehead English class.
Adjectives are words that describe things. e.g.: the cotton candy tasted sweet.
Adverbs are similar in that they describe things with how, when, why; typically ending with an –ly. e.g.: The taste of cotton candy sweetly filled my mouth.
Okay, before I lose anyone and a grammar teacher tells me I have no proper concept of the English language, let me stop while I’m still ahead and get on to the topic at hand: Praying in ways that gets God’s attention.
As a child, my prayers were simple. Truly child-like. Continue reading »

Sometimes I’m completely blown away at how God arranges things.
A few weeks ago a friend told me her daughter was getting stuck between a rock and a hard place when it came to her faith. And it broke my heart. No child should have to face anyone, situation, or incident that causes them to falter and doubt and ask ”What if God isn’t real?”
I love this friend and her daughter. I prayed; what else could I do?
A week later that same sweet girl sat at youth group Continue reading »

It was a hot summer Sunday and I sat alone in my little row of seats at church. It had been a stressful week; I was looking forward to seeing my friends.
The count-down numbers on the overhead screen were quickly running down to zero. Yet I had no church companions in my midst. I tried to Continue reading »

Left me confess something, the thought of Universalism/Unitarianism is a lovely idea.
During my wandering, New Age, seeking-something-greater-than-my-childhood-faith years, I favored and EMBRACED the idea that no matter which One Supreme Good All Knowing deity you followed – all paths led to one place, to one true God. I felt that more than a handful of us were honestly trying to live good lives, help others, seek peace and honor a loving creator of all things. And the slightest change of birth place and language, resulted in giving the same God a variety of images, titles and names. I secretly hoped Continue reading »
