I’ve been thinking about Haiti…the earthquake. Far away. All the help being given. The world has given a half-billion in donations; $170,000,000 of that is American dollars and counting. It’s an amazing thing… But there are children in America who go without a meal, they go without fitting shoes, or a coat; they go without love. Those issues existed before Haiti.
And I thought about Sri Lanka…the tsunami. The USA helped again. We like to be the world’s philanthropists. But we are giving Continue reading »

Sia (aka: Sia Kate Isobelle Furler) is an artist I’ve come to appreciate. I knew her voice from Zero 7 (another music group I totally dig – check them out if you don’t know them).
Today I want to share one of Sia’s music videos with you. Not only Continue reading »

I spent some of my holiday with friends… I am blessed.
These are friendships I treasure. These are the women I call my sisters. We are all so different, and yet so alike in unexpected ways. The longer we are together, the more we know of our good, bad and ugly parts. And yet together we are beautiful and see the best in each other. We pray for each other, we worry about circumstances, and we know when to point our fixable issues, and most importantly laugh at ourselves.

Sometimes I get an uneasy feeling about my faith. Uneasy like being invited to party, showing up in sneakers and not realizing it was a black-tie event. See, my faith doesn’t look like the type of my Godly grandma’s. It doesn’t look like the type of my childhood. It doesn’t look anything like my parent’s. It’s not dressed up in a Sunday-best suit. It’s a jeans and weathered t-shirt type of faith. Sometimes I find myself staring in the eyes of my faith and asking “who are you? – you don’t look like what others around you are displaying.” I feel like I have no one alive in my little world to share and compare with. And I desperately want to COMPARE… Continue reading »

This week my writing is focused on living a life with faith in God. Real faith. How that looks. What it’s like.
I saw this video for the first time last week and it blew me away… it reminded me of the Lifehouse video I shared last year. This video shows how faith and salvation work when you allow it into your heart. As the video shows, faith is not always easy and the “black shirts” have a way of creeping back around when you least expect it. Continue reading »

You know what? I think some people are deathly afraid to “believe” in God and Jesus and Salvation. They are afraid of setting themselves up for disappointment. They are afraid of being a fool. They are afraid of giving up whatever little bit of emotional power they still control. They are afraid of putting it out there and getting nothing in return. Essentially, afraid of a bad investment.
In the books and movies, faith ALWAYS works out. Good guys win, bad guys lose. But in real life – on this Earth – that formula is NOT guaranteed. Continue reading »

Dissect [dis·sect] – a verb: to separate into pieces, to analyze and interpret minutely
If it hadn’t become clear as mud yet, I’m on a bit of a journey with prayer. Real prayer; God honoring prayer. Some days I still have NO idea what that looks or sounds like. But I suppose that’s part of the individual process for each of us. And I’m learning that my prayer will not sound like yours. I’m working this out my own way.
In my craving-to-learn-process, one of the places I decided to look at from every direction, inside and out, was Jesus’ example of prayer (aka: The Lords Prayer).
The Lords Prayer, that’s something I came to know as a child. It’s something Continue reading »

Right off the bat, sorry if the title got that old Sugarhill Gang song running through your head. It really was the best and start of “good” rap (you know how bad you want to click that link – just do it!)
Okay, many of us work at a desk and in very close proximity to others. With that comes living in close community and getting to “enjoy” our co-workers music selections.
One gal in my office listens to smooth jazz, another has a constant angst rap autotune boom radiating from her cubicle, while another has classical wafting around, and yet another is jamming to the 80s. I am none of those – in fact my mix is pretty eclectic and the vast majority never hit Kasey Kasim’s top 40. Overall I like all music – BUT sometimes my coworkers music selections can be downright distracting… Continue reading »

In the last couple weeks I had learned of someone making up false stories and general bad mouthing; it was personal and it got to me. This was someone I had been nothing short of caring towards; I gave them food, clothes, and lent an ear and soft heart. So when I first found out of their behavior I was shocked, in disbelief. As I learned of the full truth, my simmering emotions slowly turned into a boiling anger; I stewed about it; I let it burn me up. I wanted to publicly call them out, insisting on an answer as to why they would be so nasty and mean.
Does that feel familiar? I know my story is not uncommon; we’ve all been backstabbed at one time or another. We’ve all been victim to bullying, false gossip, or simple meanness. What are we to do in times like this? Continue reading »
