Pain of Staying the Same

I stared at the skull-n-crossbones keychain hanging off the edge of my business bag. Right next to it hung pink flipflops.

I was truly hating my job and the unappreciative coworkers. Most didn’t know that I’d been working over a year without salary. Continue reading »

Unguarded Voice

Tags

They say the best writing is unguarded.

The writing that speaks—that is worthy—is the writing of truth.

Gut wrenching, honest truth.

About love;

death;

sex;

religion;

depression;

people;

fragile hope;

hopelessly delicate faith that weaves in-and-out of unanswered questions;

and witty, wishy-washy, wavering life. Continue reading »

Doubt and Wind

Mid-morning at the beach. I’m trying to absorb the scantily warm sun masked by thin wispy clouds. Cool waves escort a misty gentle breeze.

There I find peace and contentment, even though many excited children scatter over the exposed tide pool rocks. They scurry about like little hermit crabs—and I hear them in the distance giggle and squeal with delight at the various found treasures.

The waves are washing the beach clean, and erasing the markings of footprints with the ease of an overturned and shaken Etch-A-Sketch. I am lost in the picture perfect moment.

“Go placidly amidst the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.

It Happens

This new idea is ridiculous.
And yet it’s helped me tremendously.

In the last year—possibly longer—but certainly in the last year—I’ve had a very deliberate and conscious thought. It’s so simple, yet overwhelmingly complex. And it is this:

This thing going on—this circumstance—it’s happening— it’s here—to help me.

It’s here to help me.

And no matter what Continue reading »

Spring Ahead

The winter months are ending and spring is around the corner. Yes, already.

And it’s already the weekend to “spring forward” our clocks. How did that happen so soon?

During these winter months, I’ve been a very busy chick-a-dee. Many of you know me as a writer and creativity coach/art-teacher – but there’s something else I’ve been doing behind the scenes. It’s something I naturally lightly weave into my writing and creativity workshops. It’s the pebble you see in my hands above that says “believer.”  Some of you might have even noticed this “behind the scenes thing” on a page on this website.

oh hi monday

oh hi Monday.

“oh hi monday” traces back to this original post here.

hate strongly dislike the stigma of Monday. All our talk of Monday being “ick” just makes it worse. There are coffee cups, t-shirts, bumper stickers, all talking about Monday being the worse day of the week. And I get that.

BUT I’m aiming to thwart Monday’s ick-power with bits of joy. You own this post – here’s how it works: Continue reading »

Kicking the Cat and Bugs

Slang Phrase: KICK THE CAT
[verb] (late 19th century to 1950s)
To vent one’s frustrations. [the cat being ‘the lowest’ member of the household and thus most likely to suffer such abuse] CASSELL’S DICTIONARY OF SLANG

As a lover of cats I might have to disagree with Cassell’s idea of the cat being the lowest member of a house. I mean everyone knows that cats rule the roost. Cat haters…this is why you hate cats – their dominance in your lives. Alright, before I start any wars and get too far off topic back to the slang phrase. Continue reading »

Bubbly

There’s something special about bubbles appearing from nowhere in a fluted glass.

For me it’s magic, like finding a fresh spring coming from a rock. Maybe this magic is what finds the world using “Bubbly” for celebrations.

Call it what you will: Champagne, Sparkling Wine, Prosecco, Cava, Spumante, Asti, Lambrusco, Moscato d’Asti; I just call it Bubbly—no need to be snobby with fancy names about something so delicious.

“People who soar are those who refuse to sit back, sigh, and wish things would change. They neither complain of their lot nor passively dream of some distant ship coming in. Rather, they visualize in their minds that they are not quitters; they will not allow life’s circumstances to push them down and hold them under.” ~ Charles R Swindoll (evangelical Christian pastor, author, educator)

It’s so cliché to say, “you have to swim out to your ship?”

BUT seriously?… how else is it going to happen?

Even if all you do is Continue reading »

Soft Sponges

“When you’re a baby, you are God-like.” These—the words from a well-known Episcopalian priest. For some, those words are shocking. Maybe edging heresy. But for me, it was like new flavor of double-creamed-ice-cream.

Cool. Refreshing. Thick. Delicious.
Melting inside and making me…happy.

His words made my mind wander. Wander with me for a moment… Continue reading »
