what is true… go forward soiled wings

Dear Soiled Soul,

When you think it’s over,
when you don’t know what to do,
when the blows keep coming,
…go forward.

That was the message that stirred in my heart as a feather landed in my lap. Yes, that’s right, a feather landed in my lap. It was a bit like the opening scene from Forrest Gump.

A feather floats along from an unseen source until it lands at Forrest’s feet. Then he picks it up. Inspects it with curiosity. Opens his suitcase and pulls out a book. The book is “Curious George”. Did you even notice that? Without much thought he places the feather in the book.

Much like Forrest, my feather landed in my lap. I stared at it. Curious. Stunned. Then picked it up and placed it in my journal.

It wasn’t an easy morning of journaling. I was facing unpleasant facts, possible hard decisions down the road. The last words I wrote in my journal were “where do we go from here?” Then, setting down my pen, I looked up at the sky, as if to direct my question there. To Someone, to a Creator, Somewhere “out there” yet as close as my breath.

That’s when I saw the feather. Coming down – swooshing side to side. I mistook it for a dragonfly. But as it came closer–I could see it was a feather. Fluttering, flittering, floating, and twisting down until it landed in my lap.

This feather. It wasn’t fluffy and pretty like the feather from Forrest Gump.
No, rather it was… a soiled feather…from, my guess, a Soiled Wing.

Soiled Wings: a name that holds many personal meanings. An image and idea that has guided me through several years. Wings, feathers, they speak of flight, freedom. Angels. Breaking barriers. Letting go. Getting above circumstances.

Sweet Soul, if we have these invisible symbolic wings attached to us–you can bet they are messy. weathered. worn. muddy. tattered. and soiled.

And Remarkable Soul, if you think of angels when you consider feathers and wings, know there are angels who’s only agenda is to cover you. It.is.their.job. It says so here.

So with a tattered soiled feather in my lap, I was reminded of an answer when I asked the question: “where do we go from here?

The answer sounds simple, yet it is spot on: go forward.

Going forward is sometimes the hardest thing you can do. But it is far better than sliding backwards or even worse…being stuck in one place.

Sweet Soul, life can be heavy. Sometimes it’s just really hard to fly. Sometimes we can’t even consider picking up and moving on because our wings are tarred and unworthy of flight. But that just isn’t so.

This week’s truth card, let it be the feather that lands in your lap,
that comes as a gentle reminder,
…even soiled wings can fly.
…go forward.

My hope is that one day these Truth Cards will come to good use. Eventually I’d like to publish them with proceeds benefiting TWLOHA (because I think what they do is so very important). I have no idea how that will work, but it is a wish. For now they are my gift to you. So without further ado, here is your Truth Card to print. I’m offering one each week, collect them all and you’ll have a beautiful set of 52 cards. Simply click on the card (which takes you to my Flickr set) and download and print. I have my Truth Cards on a small easel. They look best printed 5″ x 5″. You are free to give them to others, in fact it would be a huge honor if you did. I just ask that you do not remove the copyright info. This is an honor system, I honor you, you honor me.   n♥JOY!

  1. These words are lovely and I believe found feathers to be messages from
loved ones – reading this today has brought comfort to me as a really close friend if mine committed suicide back in April this year was a real shock he was last person you’d expect to do that – today his family are burying his ashes and another friend of mine is doing a Dove release for him – the part about wings and freedom was especially poignant 🙂 Thankyou Sherry and for your art journaling on you tube it always inspires me :-)) xx
