Dear Busy Soul,
When did we run out of time?
Time for the things that must get done…
Time for the things we wish…but there just isn’t time.
In a world where instant messages have replaced the beautiful hand written letters, clothes driers replaced linens waving in the wind, electronic readers are replacing glossy magazines and beautiful paper books—in this world things have become faster, busier, than ever.
Oh busy soul, are you as tired as me?
Working, feeding, shopping, caring, doing, doing, doing.
And somewhere in there we attempt to get at least four hours of sleep. Six on a really good day.
Recently I read the most simple of questions (wrapped in lovely words):
“…if you could have another hour, clean like an empty plate, like a crescent moon, like a promise—what would you use it for?” (A Field Guide to Now: Notes on Mindfulness and Life in the Present Tense; by Christina Rosalie)
I knew instantly what I would want.
And then the profound thought occurred to me, “soooo, I should find that hour, and do that thing that I really want.” Perhaps I can’t do it every day. But often enough, I can.
I’d make the time, take the risk.
Because it’s worth it.
Maybe over lunch, maybe in the evening when the television is on in the other room that holds little to sooth my soul. Suddenly I could find many places to cut a corner and do the thing that I really wished for so deeply.
And busy soul, you know what?
I discovered most emails could wait, the laundry didn’t terribly mind, reading every blog I follow could be missed. It would be okay that I couldn’t talk about the last episode of Lost, or this, or that. And even the floors didn’t need to be crumb-free every day (or week).
Yes, I could carve out and slow down, for an hour, for the thing I wanted…if I had that extra hour.
And I’m making that extra hour.
And sweet busy beautiful soul,
What do you want to put on that clean plate?
What’s your heart’s desire?
Maybe it’s sleep or a blissful nap,
being with a pet,
time with a precious little one,
watch the sunset sipping a glass of scrumptious
(or the sunrise with a delicious cup of something ),
meditate / pray,
move your body,
words and time shared with another cherished soul,
reading, or creative play.
The promise of an extra hour,
of the thing you want.
Tell me sweet soul, what price tag can you put on it?
What is it worth to you?
Perhaps, it is priceless.
If so, please, consider this, let the crumbs be on the floor…
No judging, no shaming, no feeling guilty for making the time.
(and don’t let anyone else do this to you either)
Because, really sweet soul, this is how life was supposed to be.
Doing the things that bring GOoDness to your soul.
Today, tomorrow, create the precious extra hour.
My hope is that one day these Truth Cards will come to good use. Eventually I’d like to publish them with proceeds benefiting TWLOHA (because I think what they do is so very important). I have no idea how that will work, but it is a wish. For now they are my gift to you. So without further ado, here is your Truth Card to print. I’m offering one each week, collect them all and you’ll have a beautiful set of 52 cards. Simply click on the card (which takes you to my Flickr set) and download and print. I have my Truth Cards on a small easel. They look best printed 5″ x 5″. You are free to give them to others, in fact it would be a huge honor if you did. I just ask that you do not remove the copyright info. This is an honor system, I honor you, you honor me. n♥JOY!
